Hung jury in attempted murder case

Turning to the courts, despite testimony by a paralyzed victim who had to be rolled into court on a portable bed, a jury was today unable to reach a verdict in the case of twenty-three year old Marvin Cruz Reyes. Reyes was charged with Attempted Murder for allegedly shooting twenty-six year old Kareem Wright. The jury of seven women and two men was locked up for about four hours but was unable to decide. According to Director of Public Prosecutions, Cheryl-Lynn Branker-Taitt, a decision is now pending as to whether Reyes will be retried. The incident occurred on August twenty-sixth, 2007 on Sarstoon Street when a bullet allegedly fired by Reyes shattered Wright’s upper spine leaving him bedridden and paralyzed from neck down. According to Wright, who testified in the court of Justice Adolph Lucas on Tuesday, the incident may have been triggered by jealousy since his girlfriend Rashawn Garbutt was Reyes’ ex. Reyes is also currently on remand for a Murder charge.
