Pre-schools celebrate diverse cultures

Story PictureToday preschoolers from across the country celebrated Cultural Day as part of activities in connection with Child Stimulation Month that is observed each year in March. This afternoon the children of Morning Star Preschool invited their moms and dads to a special luncheon that had a wide variety of local dishes from various ethnic groups. According to Principal Desiree Wagner the meals included rice and beans, caldo, hudut, tamales and panades. Wagner says today’s activity helps to sensitize the young children to the different cultures of Belize.

?Having the preschoolers depicting the different cultures and the different ethnic groups and their food and so forth. So our responsibility is to have the children know the different type of food and how these foods are prepared and so forth and have them taste it also.?

?Whatever we are doing for these few weeks is just for us to stimulate the children and to let them have an idea, both parent and children, to realise that we the teachers at the preschool centres cannot do everything on our own. We also need the support of the parents. So today shows that support.?

The meals were prepared by the children?s parents. The students also came to school dressed in clothes typical of the various cultures of Belize.
