Chopping victim dies; attacker charged with murder
A resident of Dangriga has been re-arrested and charged with murder following the death of a Placencia businessman. According to police, twenty-three-year-old Darren Chiu of an Oak Street address now stands accused of murder, in addition to his pending charge of robbery. The charges stem from an incident in Placencia Village in late February in which fifty-two-year-old shopkeeper Wang Yong Ming was attacked with a machete in a course of a robbery. During the confrontation, Wang sustained a severe chop wound to the right side of his head and was admitted to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for treatment. However, around three on Sunday afternoon, Wang died of his injuries. A post mortem has determined the cause of death as brain damage. Following his appearance today in Dangriga Magistrate’s Court, Chiu was remanded to Hattieville Prison.
