George Price Remembered Four Years After Death

National hero and Father of the Nation George Price died four years ago on September nineteenth, and every year on his anniversary, the People’s United Party celebrates his legend and legacy with a service day. That starts off with a wreath laying ceremony and remembrance at the Lord Ridge Cemetery. Today, a group of family members, party faithful and students from St. Martin’s Primary School gathered to pay tribute to the great man. P.U.P. Leader, Francis Fonseca, says it’s a significant ceremony which will never get old or meaningless.

“It certainly does not lose its freshness for me; I think in fact, with each year that passes, I think we understand the importance of Mister Price’s life and work. So it has more meaning for me personally, each year that I come here. And as I said in my remarks, it is our duty; it is our solemn duty and obligation to do so. This great man was yes indeed the Father of our Nation, but for us it is deeply personal. He was the leader of our party, our great leader and so we have a solemn, personal connection and I certainly do to Mister Price. And so for me it continues to have great meaning and I don’t see that ever diminishing at all.”

“Okay now sir, you know Mister Price during his time and certainly anybody who’s ever heard Mister Hector Silva on the radio will know that Mister Price faced his trials as party leader; he faced his mutinies as well. Was that something you reflected on during this week when you met with the eleven standard bearers who have been staying out of party events and having their differences with you?”

“Certainly Jules, certainly. I often reflect on Mister Price’s leadership, his values, his work. He was a leader like none before and perhaps none ever so it is important for anybody who wants to be a leader to look at Mister Price’s life and to see what lessons you can draw from that life. I prayed a lot as he often advised us to do and I think one of the most important lessons of his leadership is the absolute importance of unity in the party. He was…he would say that at almost every meeting. Unity is strength; united we stand, divided we fall. So certainly that was on my mind and in my heart as I approached the discussions with our colleagues.”
