The grief-stricken families of forty-two-year-old Rogelio Rancharan and his best friend Enrique Tayun, like Corozal police, are puzzled as to the motive behind their deaths. Both men were slain execution-style in a cane field on Friday morning near the outskirts of town. A third person, who was in the vicinity at the time of the shooting, escaped unharmed. Albert Rancharan is the father of the deceased cañero.

“At five o’clock I the morning I went to fertilize the sugar cane field and I dint know anything until 3:45 in the evening because I was working somewhere else with a tractor. I didn’t get to know what happen until I reach home and they told me what happened because nobody could have reached me at that time. When I reach home I met everybody crying and they told me that they shot my son in the head. I said but how did that happen and nobody knows what really happened, At that time they had him at the morgue already and we have been trying from Friday, spinning around to get help to see if we can get the body out. But up to now we can’t get any answer on it. We try get help from other people but still we can’t get the body.”
According to Superintendent Dennis Arnold, the lone survivor of the deadly incident reported the matter to Corozal police sometime after ten a.m.

“At about 10:45 AM a 54 year old male came to the police station reporting that while he was in the area, this area was about three and a half miles north east of the Corozal area that shots were fired at them. Police went to that same area, where upon arrival saw two Hispanic male person lying face up in a cane-field apparently dead with what appears to be gunshot wounds to the head. Upon close search of the area two expended 9mm shell were found. The person was later found out to be Rogelio Rancharan, forty-two years old of Chula Vista area, that’s Corozal district also and the other person was Enrique Tayun, fifty-eight years of San Andres Area. What actually happened on Saturday we revisited the area and we had back tracked the entire event that the witness had told us and it checked out. But it is still kind of puzzling that he just heard shots and he ran, he didn’t look back to see where the shots were coming from of who were firing shots, if in fact it was at them. We are still investigating the matter, it is fairly fresh, we are canvassing both villages to see if anybody knows anything in relation to what actually occurred or what may be the cause of what had happened.”
Tayun’s daughter, Diana, described receiving the ominous phone call while on her way to Chetumal.

“I had off that day and I was going to Chetumal with my mom when I got a call to inform me that something had happened to my dad. So we decided to come back and that’s when we got the information that he was killed. At the moment we don’t have any information because no one informed us what happened, they only told us that he was killed with his friend, that’s all that I know. My dad and his friend where very good and inseparable, they were the best friends that o get to now, they were close and honestly I don’t know how this happened.”
