Five Weeks for Parties to Campaign
The rollout of the party’s countrywide vote-seeking activities will see an energetic campaign to shed light on a number of issues, including corruption and misconduct. The launch of the P.U.P. manifesto will also be a significant part of the national campaign.
Francis Fonseca, Leader, People’s United Party
“Over the next five weeks Mike we will be holding rallies across the country, we will be unveiling our economic policy reform agenda, our health reform agenda, our governance reform agenda. We will, of course, unveil our manifesto so all of these things will make it very, very clear to the Belizean people that the People’s United Party is ready to govern, we are willing to serve the Belizean people and we are prepared to do so with a team of competent individuals who have the interest of this nation at heart.”
Mike Rudon
“Can you point to one main issue, one platform that you all will be using against the UDP? I know back in 2008 they kept harping back to corruption, that was their platform. What is the platform for the PUP?”
Francis Fonseca
“Well, there are two Mike. On the positive side, as I said, we will be talking about reform. We will be talking about governance reform, fixing our failing institutions. We think a lot of people are frustrated about that. We will talk about job creation, how we can grow the Belizean economy, create jobs for the Belizean people and we will be talking about education and health, how we can fix these failing systems in our country. Failing education system, failing health system. So on the positive side that is our message. Of course we will be pointing out to the Belizean people all the failings, the many failings of this UDP government. Corruption will be at the top of the list, corruption, mismanagement, incompetence, the friends and family; those who have benefited so much from this UDP government around Mr. Barrow and his ministers and their families while the Belizean people have gotten poorer and poorer. So we will be talking about poverty and inequality, growing poverty, growing inequality under this UDP government and we will also be talking about unity and respect, a very important message, a very important theme that has been lost under this UDP government over the past eight years.”
