Juan Rubio Freed of Murder Charge in Pomona Stabbing

Juan Rubio

Also in the courts, a man who was accused of killing a resident of Pomona, Stann Creek District, was freed of a murder charge when Justice Denis Hanomansingh ruled that he acted in self defence. Juan Rubio was initially charged for fatally stabbing twenty-six year old Karim Peters on November eighteenth, 2012.  In the trial by judge without a jury, which began on September sixteenth, the prosecution called eight witnesses and in handing down his ruling, the judge said he was satisfied that Rubio was under attack and acted in self defence when he inflicted the fatal stab wound on Peters.  Rubio was represented by attorney, Dickie Bradley who allowed his client to take the stand. Rubio told the court that he was hanging out with his brother when Peters arrived on a bicycle and interrupted their conversation. Peters, he said, was asked to leave; he did, but returned with a machete and attacked Rubio.  Attorney Bradley also called two witnesses who gave collaborating evidence that he was not the aggressor.  The single stab wound to Peter’s collar bone area punctured his lungs and he died.
