Ousted Honduran president meets with US Secretary of State

Story PictureIn an update to the continued crisis in Honduras, the deposed president Manuel Zelaya met today with the US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton in Washington. It is the first high level meeting with the US since the June twenty-eighth coup de etat which ousted Zelaya. The big news to come out of that private meeting is that the president of Costa Rica, Oscar Arias, has been asked to serve as mediator between Zelaya and the interim president Roberto Michelletti. Both sides have agreed to this proposal and it is known that Zelaya will travel to Costa Rica this Wednesday. The first encounter is programmed for this Thursday when both sides will sit around the same table in San Jose. Zelaya says the meeting is not to negotiate but rather to discuss the removal of the interim government. He also announced that he had removed the Honduran Ambassador to Washington, Roberto Flores, who supports Michelletti. In Honduras, meanwhile the airport in Tegucigalpa remains closed until Friday, according to press reports.
