Francis Fonseca Says VIP’s Constitutional Challenge Will Fall Flat

The last redistricting exercise was completed prior to the 2008 general elections.  Since then the voter population across all thirty-one constituencies have changed considerably.  As we mentioned earlier in the newscast, the VIP has filed a constitutional claim in the Supreme Court challenging a section of the laws of Belize which pertains to the equitable distribution of the electorate.  The party is also seeking to nullify the results of the upcoming elections.  According to P.U.P. Party Leader Francis Fonseca, the challenge will fall flat before the courts.

“I don’t think the legal challenge will go anywhere in court, but I think it is a legitimate issue. I think it is certainly something that we are absolutely committed to looking at very quickly. We believe, as I think you’ll know, that there should be a re-registration exercise taken place already before this election. And certainly we are committed as a party, upon forming the government, to immediately begin that process of looking, reviewing the electoral boundaries, reviewing the divisions. There is a need for greater equity in the distribution of divisions and votes and hopefully we can even reduce the number of electoral divisions. But in an equitable way, in an equitable way.”
