Paralyzed man testifies against his shooter

Story PictureEmotions ran high in court today as twenty-six year old Kareem Wright, who is paralyzed from the neck down, was wheeled in on a bed to testify against the man who allegedly tried to kill him. That man is twenty-three year old Marvin Cruz Reyes and he appeared in the Supreme Court today to be tried for Attempted Murder. Wright testified that he was walking home with his girlfriend, Rashawn Garbutt, and a friend in the wee hours of August twenty-sixth, 2007when Reyes approached them. The entire incident might have been triggered by jealousy because, according to Wright, Reyes is Garbutt’s ex-boyfriend. Reyes allegedly fired the first shot in the air sending Wright, Garbutt and their friend running in separate directions. But Wright claims he turned back when he heard Garbutt cry out and that’s when he was shot in the right side of the neck. But in court Reyes made no effort to defend himself and chose not to cross examine the witness nor address the jury. The case has been adjourned until tomorrow when the jury is expected to present a verdict. While Reyes appeared unrepresented, Crown Counsel Trienia Young represented the prosecution.
