Shooting victim dies of wounds

A Belize City man who was shot in the neck five days ago has succumbed to his injuries. Stanley Coleman died early Tuesday morning at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. He was shot in the neck last Thursday afternoon during an altercation with another man in the area of Welch Street. Police say they initially detained one person but could not conclusively tie him to the shooting and as a result had to release him. They have since detained another person pending further investigations. Police are going on the assumption that the shooting was the work of one person, but whoever is eventually fingered as the triggerman stands to face a single charge of murder.

The proliferation of deadly gunfire in the streets of the old capital continued overnight as police reports say the Wagner’s Lane neighbourhood of Belize City came under attack on Monday night. Eighteen year old Shamir Henry told police that around nine last night he was standing on the street near his house along with a female companion, when a man rode up to them and opened fire. While none of the bullets struck Henry or his friend, a neighbour?s dog could not escape the shooter’s arc, taking a bullet in the back. When police visited the scene, the gunman had long vanished but in his wake was evidence of the crime, namely six spent nine millimetre shells. Authorities have since detained one suspect pending further investigation.

Two people are being questioned in connection with a robbery at a Southside business establishment. The manager of Leslie’s Building Supplies, located near the corner of Western Avenue and Carnation Street, reported to police that around ten thirty on Monday morning, a man walked into the building and asked about the price of cement. While the manager was tending to the customer, she reported that a second man entered the yard, pulling on a black ski mask as he did so. The man at the counter then reportedly grabbed the manager and forced her into an office, after which the two men proceeded to ransack the building. They escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash and a laptop computer. Police investigations have led to the detention of two suspects.
