GSU Commander Campaigns in the Media

Mark Flowers

The Gang Suppression Unit has come under fire for early morning weekend raids on homes belonging to P.U.P. supporters in the community of San Jose in the Orange Walk District. The victims claim that they were quizzed on their political affiliation, and asked by the GSU officers if they wanted to talk to Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega. The officers actually claimed that they were looking for guns and drugs, but found none in any of the homes they raided. Today, we managed to speak to GSU commander Mark Flowers to get some clarification. Not surprisingly, he told us that they got a report of a gun in one of the homes. Very surprisingly, though, Flowers took the time to campaign quite openly for the U.D.P. – something we don’t believe we’ve ever seen so blatantly done by a senior police officer.

Supt. Mark Flowers, Commander, Gang Suppression Unit

“If I was a politician and I was behind in a race I would certainly use any tactics including libelling and defaming and asserting that the process wasn’t working, but boss don’t do it at the expense of the Police. Not because you deh lose in a political race you will blame the Police. The people will make the final determination and what is a foregone conclusion is that you know the government will be returned. Don’t mix the government with the Police. I think they have done enough that people have seen.”

“It sounds like you’re campaigning for the government.”

Supt. Mark Flowers

“Well I’m not campaigning…I’m saying if these people would be so mischievous to want to associate their own demise with the Police’s function…”

Reporter

“Sir with all due respect, let me ask you. How is it that you came to learn about that scene specifically in that village in Orange Walk North?”

Supt. Mark Flowers

“Once my officers are on an operation, I am briefed before and after the operations. As a consequence to that operation another operation was conducted this morning between twelve and four in the morning at the prison. We went there for a particular item and by the time we got there we had to come into the prison this morning to do a search which was conducted. Again we were not successful with the intended object but it is an ongoing thing. It is a follow up. We know from our own information there was a firearm in one of those houses. We know who the person that had the firearm is.”

Reporter

“Did you find a firearm?”

Mark Flowers

“We did not find it but we also know that from our intelligence the firearm was intended to be brought into the prisons.”

This officer is the most stupid person I have heard in the public service. If you are UDP , that is O K but to go open on national T V to side with a political party is the most stupid thing to do. I think he must shut up and he will be better off. But it seems he learned from Sedi. That is why Belize can not prosper because we have stupid people leading the government and a few Government departments. Some of them are placed there due to their political affiliation.
