Herman Longsworth Came and Went, Still No Berger Field
Since this is Longsworth’s last hurray as Minister of State, we also asked about Berger Field. That forlorn field on Vernon Street in the city was one of Longsworth’s campaign promises when he entered office. In fact, at one point he had up a huge billboard with a concept drawing of a new and improved, state of the art, Berger Field sporting complex. Unfortunately, that dream went the way of so many other campaign promises. Today Longsworth explained why it did.
Herman Longsworth, Minister of State, Ministry of Sports
“Berger Field didn’t happen simply because I was trying to make it into something that would have really been more beneficial to everybody and those who committed to partnering with me did not come up. But you can check with Belize Water Services that they never did spend the money; the money is back with Belize Water Services. In fact it never did leave because they were going to pay for the project incrementally. So I would not have…I could have spent the money from BWS you know and have a half-finished facility. But I am not that type of person. So because we didn’t have all the resources to complete the project, I did not start it.”
As you would know, Longsworth is no longer seeking electoral office. He stepped down from the Albert when Tracy Panton emerged for the U.D.P.
Makes since not to start a structure if you can’t complete it, but it being a sports facility, I’m sure he would have received money from donors ,public and government to see it’s completion.
