…as Belmopan prepares for Friday demo
Today in the capital city, preparations for the anticipated anti and pro government demonstrations on Independence Hill continued. Since Wednesday, government workers have been constructing formidable barriers as a part of the police crowd control strategy. This is in response to last Friday’s chaos during which the established police line was crossed several times by protestors. Meanwhile, the Belmopan City Council has announced that public restrooms, portable toilets and drinking water will be available at no charge to the additional population expected to descend on the capital. In a press release issued today, the Belmopan City Council states, “The City of Belmopan represents the bedrock of law and order, the seat of government and a beacon of our democracy. We invite and encourage our visitors to please respect our city by protesting and manifesting your concerns in a peaceful and civil manner.” In that spirit, the city council is organising a candlelight prayer vigil on the steps of the National Assembly tonight at seven.
