Belizean Shoppers in Chetumal Targeted by Thieves
Belizeans travelling across the border to shop during this Christmas season are asked to be on alert. A Mexican newspaper reports that Belizean shoppers are being targeted by thieves who prey on them at the Plaza de Las Americas mall or at commercial centres such as Wallmart and Sams. The newspaper says that the modus operandi of the thieves is to make body contact on unsuspecting persons to distract them and then steal their bags or wallets. The Belizean Consul in Quintana Roo, Jorge Valencia, confirmed the growing number of incidents to the newspaper and says that a report has been made to Mexican authorities to intervene. He is also appealing to nationals to be vigilant of their personal belongings. The thieves work in unison and steal from cash to credit cards. So if you head across the border seeking deals, be careful that you don’t lose more than you bargain for.
