Road Traffic Accident Leaves Elderly

Reymundo Reyes

An elderly resident of Spanish Lookout lost his life on Wednesday afternoon during a fatal road traffic accident.  Sixty-seven-year-old Klaus Friesen was knocked down and dragged while riding his bicycle along Center Road.  According to a statement taken from the driver of the vehicle that ran him over, Friesen was riding in the direction of Baking Pot Ferry when Jose Roberto Lobos attempted to pass him by.  Unfortunately, Friesen reportedly veered into the path of the pickup truck and was fatally hit from behind.  Deputy Officer Commanding San Ignacio Police, Inspector Reymundo Reyes, told News Five that a notice of intended prosecution has been served on Lobos and an investigation is ongoing.

On the Phone: Insp. Reymundo Reyes, Deputy O.C., San Ignacio Police

“Okay, this was on information received yesterday sometime after 4:45 p.m., of a fatal traffic accident in the Spanish Lookout area, to be specific on Center Road of Spanish Lookout not far from Universal Hardware.  Information is that one Mr. Jose Roberto Lobos, a Belizean of Bullet Tree Road, San Ignacio was driving his green and grey Isuzu Supercab pickup truck on Center Road traveling to or in the direction of Baking Pot Ferry.  At that time it appeared that Mr. Klaus Friesen, sixty-seven-years-old, a Belizean of Spanish Lookout Community, who was riding a green in color bicycle was about a hundred yards ahead of Mr. Lobos, traveling in the same direction.  Mr. Lobos then attempted to overtake Mr. Friesen by going to his left, and at the same time it appears that Mr. Friesen went also to his left where the collision happened which ended up with Mr. Friesen being under the vehicle and dragged a few feet away before the vehicle came to a stop.  Police visited the scene where they did process the scene by taking photographs and drawing the sketch plan in the presence of the driver and he was escorted to the San Ignacio Police Station where the case was recorded and a notice of intended prosecution was charged on him.  His vehicle was impounded for inspection today as it involves a fatal case.  We follow the protocols of inspecting the motor vehicle that is involved in that accident.”
