Dead bandit ID as Guatemalan
Police have identified the body of a Guatemalan man shot and killed by Belize police near Bullet Tree Falls village over the Christmas holidays. An unnamed individual from Guatemala showed up at the San Ignacio hospital morgue and positively identified the dead man as Guillermo Garcia Esquivel. Garcia’s mother is believed to be living in the border town of Melchor de Mencos and San Ignacio police are liaising with their counterparts across the border to try and locate her. According to the authorities shortly after midnight on Christmas Day, villagers reported that suspicious men were in the area firing off guns. Officers say when they responded, they spotted two armed men stooping down in the bush just off to the Bullet Tree road. The duo is reported to have opened fire on the cops who fired back, seriously injuring the two men. Both were rushed to the San Ignacio hospital for treatment but Garcia was pronounced dead on arrival. The other man, twenty-three year old Guillermo Tun of Branch Mouth Village was treated for gunshot wounds to both legs. Tun remains at the KHMH under police guard recovering from his injuries.
