Punta Gorda Police Investigate Murder of Taxi-man

Antonio Rodriguez

Punta Gorda Police are trying to determine who may have lured a taxi-man to his death on a remote feeder road on the outskirts of that community. A we reported on Tuesday, a passerby found sixty-one year old Elridgeville resident Antonio Rodriguez barely alive on the ground next to his vehicle at about midday. He had been stabbed multiple times to the neck and upper body, and died before Police could arrive on the scene. While investigators have ruled out robbery, they have yet to identify a motive which would lead them to the killer, or killers. Details were sketchy after the body was found, but today via phone Superintendent Simeon Alvarez provided some information on Punta Gorda’s third murder of 2015.

On the Phone: Supt. Simeon Alvarez, Officer Commanding Punta Gorda

“Based on information received the police visited a feeder road off Joe Taylor Bridge on the left hand side when heading out of Punta Gorda Town. They saw the lifeless body of a taxi-driver who was later identified to be Antonio Rodriguez, sixty-one-year-old of an Elridgeville address, on the ground next to his vehicle. He had multiple stab wounds to the upper part of the body. Just next to him was his licensed nine millimetre which was not stolen. As a result of that the police processed the scene, took the body to the Punta Gorda morgue where he was pronounced dead and presently the police are conducting an investigation.”

“Sir we understand that the police are not treating it as a robbery at this point.”

On the Phone: Supt. Simeon Alvarez

“It is not a robbery. We are not treating it as a robbery because as I had mentioned earlier his firearm was intact, it was on the ground just next to the body and his wallet was also in his possession in his pocket. It is not a robbery.”

Mike Rudon

“Sir could you tell us what the preliminary investigation has turned up at this time?”

On the Phone: Supt. Simeon Alvarez

“Definitely we can say that he was lured to that location due to the fact that it is a remote location and not a residential area. We strongly suspect that he was lured to that location and was murdered there.”

Mike Rudon

“From looking at the body were you able to determine if he had just been murdered or was his body there for some time?”

On the Phone: Supt. Simeon Alvarez

“What happened is that a resident of that area was coming from home when she saw the body on the ground. Apparently he was still in a conscious state. She gave him CPR to see if he would recover but he apparently passed away after taking his last breath o the ground and then she called the Police immediately who responded to the crime scene.”

Mike Rudon

“From the crime scene were you all able to determine if there was any scuffle? Was his weapon fired?”

On the Phone: Supt. Simeon Alvarez

“His firearm was not fired, but what we can see from the crime scene is that the person who may have committed the crime at the time was seated either at the back or next to him and it was during the process while he was driving that the stab wounds were inflicted, because he received one to the back of his neck – so we strongly suspect that one of the culprits, if one or more, was seated behind him.”

Police are following up some leads at this time to see if they can identify the killer or killers.
