In the Toledo District…Was a bitter land dispute in San Pedro, Columbia the motive behind a grisly weekend murder? The lifeless body of fifty-five-year-old Evaristo Bul was discovered by Punta Gorda police sometime after nine p.m. on Saturday night between the communities of San Pedro, Columbia and San Miguel. On the Phone: Supt. Simeon Alvarez, O.C., Punta Gorda Police
“Sometime around 9:20 p.m. on Saturday, December, twenty-sixth, 2015, police received information of a dead body on the road between San Pedro, Columbia and the village of San Miguel. As a result of that, the police responded and upon their arrival there they saw the lifeless body of a Maya descent male person who was later identified to be Evaristo Bul, fifty-five-years-old, resident of Columbia Village. He was seen with multiple chop wounds to the upper part of the body which included the head and the left shoulder. And also observed was a bullet wound on the left side of the chest. Police investigation so far reveal that the deceased was heading home and half mile away from the village of Columbia when he was attacked by the suspects who are presently in custody at the Punta Gorda Police Station. Prior to this incident, on that same particular date, the alcalde from the village of Columbia had a court case, under the alcalde system, between the deceased and a family from that same particular village pertaining to a land dispute of which the deceased was claiming the land. We strongly suspect that the incident, the murder is as a result of the land dispute that had occurred because it was adjourned for another date for the deceased to produce proper documents for the piece of land.”
