4 children injured by drunk driver
Four children from Orange Walk Town are recovering after being knocked down Sunday by a drunken driver. Authorities say the children, ages six, nine, ten and twelve years old, were walking on the sidewalk on the main road through town when a white Chevy Nova ran off the pavement onto the sidewalk, hitting the children and causing damage to a sign and a lamp post. Reports are that the driver tried to run away from the scene, but bystanders quickly grabbed him and held him until police arrived. Described as a forty-five year old man from Trial Farm Village, police say the driver appeared to be highly intoxicated. The children: two brothers, a sister and a friend, received numerous cuts, scrapes, bruises and other injuries and were taken to Northern Regional Hospital. While Walter Valdez has since been discharged, Jairo and Kariza Valdez and Fabiola Rivera remain hospitalized. According to police, the driver has been tested for alcohol and remains in custody. He will be charged but police are awaiting a medical report from the doctor classifying the children’s injuries before proceeding.
