St. Michael?s takes high school hoops crown

Story PictureJames Adderley, Reporting

Good evening, I?m James Adderley with this latest dish of Sports Monday. It?s championship time inside the Central Division Secondary School Basketball playoffs. So we turn to the City Centre for Friday night?s where the Anglican Cathedral College found itself in a must win situation to keep its title hopes alive having lost Game I to St. Michael?s College fifty-eight to fifty.

ACC strikes for first blood via the efforts of Jarret Jones who smoothly delivers the baseline jumper.

St. Michaels reply comes from the familiar float of Densmore Edwards.

It?s more Densmore Edwards for SMC as he gets two more; he would finish with a team high sixteen points.

ACC?s answer to Edwards comes in the person of Jarret Jones who brings his team to within two points with this penetration right down the middle.

Jarret Jones has the vision and has the game and he certainly wants the big W as he gets two of his game high twenty-two points to give ACC a one point lead.

Make it a nine point lead for ACC when Glenroy McDonald, son of Ann Marie strikes for two of his double digit eleven points.

However, this bucket by Zebedee Peterson gives St. Michael?s a one point lead to take into intermission.

Out of the break Elroy Yorke goes to the left hand for two of his thirteen points for ACC.

And he shows he is for real–a real run and gun player when he comes back with this big time move.

Meanwhile it?s more McDonald as he battles for possession and comes up with a big bucket to tie the ballgame at thirty-nine points a piece.

But here comes Densmore Edwards with the steal and with the good looking runner for two. On the very next possession, Edwards gets the long pass and he gets against Elroy Yorke.

Nelson Dillett then gets hot as he strikes for two of his twelve points in St. Michaels College.

Up by eight points, Edwards gets careless and commits this personal hand that takes him out of the ballgame as things begin to change immediately.

Jarrett Jones wants three Jarrett Jones gets three.

Devin Cacho makes it a one point game with this lay off the glass.

Here the moment of the ballgame down by two with a precious few seconds remaining on the clock–a bad throw in by McDonald gives SMC the possession. They go on to win sixty to fifty-five and become the 2004 Male Basketball Champion inside Belize City and we certainly say congratulations.

Turning to the Female side, St. Catherine?s Academy boasted a one game lead going into Game II Friday night against St. Michael?s College, which put the Southside girl in a must win situation and we must give respect to the mothers who have come to support their daughters in this adventure.

Of course, for St. Michael?s girls it looks like the end of the road when they trail the Catherine?s girls by ten points at the half.

So Catherine Jones gets busy as she goes high off the glass for two points.

It?s more Jones off this throw in a she strikes for two of her game high twelve points Then she makes it a one-point deficit for St. Michaels off the missed shot.

And the winning basket–it comes from who else? Clarence Jones as SMC girls goes on to post the twenty-nine to twenty to extent the series to a final Game III which comes up tonight at the City Centre.

Turning to the football scene, the Belize Rural Football Logue kicked off its three game finals Sunday at Sandhill with the two finalists hailing from Lucky Strike.

With the kick off is Pueblo Escondido in a showdown with the Lucky Strike Eagles.

Early in the ballgame, Pueblo appears to be the protagonist and should have come up with a goal to move the scoreboard right here.

Jack Dawson gets another chance to put Pueblo Escondido up on the scoreboard first, but the keeper makes a good safe here.

Since Pueblo can?t seem to make use of its early dominance, the Eagles step up and this costly mistake by the goalkeeper gives them a 1-zip first half lead on a goal credited to Frederick Garbutt, which holds up at intermission.

In second half this next individual effort by Tyrone Muschamp pays off with this left foot goal to make it a two zip ballgame.

Jermaine Zuniga makes it a 3-zip lead with this right foot push.

And goal four comes off this left foot touch by Albert Lenares to bring the 4-zip win to the Lucky Strike Eagles.

Game II comes up this Sunday at Sandhill.

In closing, Sports Monday mourns the passing of Mrs. Maurfine Jones also known as Ms. May. She did a whole lot for Belizean Softball. Hey folks that?s our show for today. We certainly invite you back same time, same place, next week. Jah over all, I?m James Adderley.
