Cayo gyal returns to exhibit art
Ask anyone to name a Belizean artist who lives in Germany and the immediate answer will be a resounding “Pen Cayetano”. But guess what? Pen’s not the only child of the jewel painting palm trees in the heart of Europe…and today I got to meet her.
Janelle Chanona, Reporting
Though she?s lived outside Belize for more than thirty years, Janice Moreno Beier has never given up her native roots. A ?Cayo Gyal? by birth, Moreno stumbled into her talent as an artist late in life, dabbling in clay in San Salvador and later in porcelain painting in Germany. But for the past six years, oils have been her main medium of expression.

?It?s so much you can do with them, you can make a face, you do what you want and with the colours also. I like to experiment.?
Moreno says the inspiration for her pieces come from photographs, bringing Belizean sunshine into her new world.

?My husband has a lot of pictures he took of Belize, of the market and all over and then from there I look and see just the person standing and create my own thing.?
?I just remember how like in Cayo, the women with their baskets, the colours; it?s in me–it?s just there.?
All twenty-six of the paintings are for sale. The show officially opens tonight at the Image Factory in Belize City.

?I hope the Belizeans will come and enjoy my paintings. That?s what I came for; to show them and hope they enjoy it.?
The exhibition will continue at the Image Factory until mid-January.
