Gunshots Ring Out on Barrack Road as Gang Tensions Escalate

While a mother and child were injured in the Dolphin Street shooting, a pair of Belize City men is fortunate to have escaped unscathed from a mid-morning shooting near Newtown Barracks earlier today.  The intended target of the armed assault has reportedly been sought for quite some time by a rival group from Majestic Alley and it is not the first that he’s come under attack.  According to a sister, who asked to remain anonymous, her younger sibling had just left their home on Barrack Road and crossed the street to converse with a friend when they noticed a trio of men running towards them.  In a split second the sound of gunshots reverberated in the area.  Fearing for their lives both men scrambled for cover in an adjacent compound, taking refuge inside a work shed.  Employees of the body shop, as well as the nearby Selfloral flower shop were all present at the time of the shooting, luckily no one was injured.  It is believed that the incident may have been caught on surveillance cameras on the compound.  In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, officers swarmed the vicinity but were unable to make an arrest.  They were tightlipped as to the identity of the intended target. Three persons are currently in custody for the midmorning shooting; however, no official report has been made by the target who it is believe is in hiding.
