Pirates Rob Tourists Near Middle Long Caye, Was Woman Sexually Assaulted?
There’s still more crime…A vessel moored near Middle Long Caye came under attack last Wednesday by pirates operating in waters southeast of Belize City. During the incident, passengers onboard the boat were held at gunpoint before being relieved of a number of possessions, including cash, camera, computers, food, drinks and jewelry, as well as an outboard engine. Interestingly, local authorities have been tightlipped about the incident and did not report the heist in the daily police blotter. While ComPol Whylie admits knowledge of the matter, he is confident that the culprits will be brought to justice. According to Assistance Commissioner Dezerie Phillips, however, says that despite allegations of sexual assault against a woman, examinations revealed that she was not sexually assaulted by the seagoing bandits.

“There was an incident reported off Middle Long Caye last Wednesday where a vessel that was anchored off the coast of the island had essentially come under attack by a launch where a female on that particular vessel was sexually assaulted and an armed robbery was committed. Can you provide details as to what transpired and where you are in terms of the investigation so far?”
Allen Whylie, Commissioner of Police
“I am aware of the report indeed. I do know that the boat had been processed and I do know also that we’ve conducted some searches and we have one suspect in custody. Some items have been recovered and I won’t get into those but we believe that that is a case that we’ll be able to solve.”
ACP Dezerie Phillips, Regional Commander, Eastern Division North
“Based on medical examinations conducted there was no evidence of any sexual assault upon the female. So that has been ruled out.”
