Will Police Provide Security for Would-be Targets?

Bradley Paumen

The prosecution in the Bradley Paumen case is convinced that they have more than enough to convict the wealthy American businessman on four charges of Abetment to Murder, each which carries a life sentence. One of the objections to bail centred on the fact that Paumen has the means to flee prosecution with relative ease. There is recent precedence for that objection, since fugitive David Nanes Schnitzer skipped the country just after getting bail. Prime Minister Dean Barrow in an interview after that debacle stated that the Police dropped the ball since they were supposed to have Schnitzer under round the clock surveillance. Today, we asked Commissioner Allen Whylie if there is a plan to keep tabs on Paumen, since he is accused of such heinous crimes.

Allen Whylie, Commissioner of Police

“We have none. He is I think he might be a Belizean-American I’m not too sure. But he was offered bail by the Courts. But once he is offered bail and he meets the condition of the bail then he is free to move around. I believe one of the conditions is that he is not to leave the country and he is also to report to the Police. We have to respect the conditions of the bail that was granted to him.”

“Do you believe that he is a flight risk?”

Allen Whylie

“I don’t think so. From my understanding he has considerable investments here and he has been here for many years, so I don’t think that he is. The Court would have considered all those things I believe when they decided whether or not to grant him bail.”

“Will you all provide security for the persons it is believed he intended to target, since there were a number of persons named and their safety might be at risk?”

Allen Whylie

“I don’t think so at this stage. If those persons believe that the threat continues then we can look at that. But those persons are aware of and I am certain that they have taken their own precautions. But at this stage we are not providing security to anybody.”
