Inmates Caught Smuggling Weed
Magistrate Mendoza also dealt with the case of two inmates who were caught attempting to smuggle weed inside the Tango Eleven area of the Hattieville prison. Twenty-five year old Sergio Martinez and twenty-eight year old Jarold Lamb Arthurs were busted on Sunday as they attempted to throw a bag of weed over a prison fence. The duo pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of possession simplicita and not guilty to drug trafficking. Martinez told the court that the weed was for his own consumption to keep him calm since he has five more years behind bars to complete before he goes home.
Arthurs took ownership of the weed and Magistrate Mendoza imposed a three month jail term upon both of them which is to run concurrently with the time they are presently serving. Martinez was convicted of burglary and serving a ten-year jail term. Arthurs claims he is on remand for a murder he did not commit; he is expected to be tried on February twenty-ninth, 2016. A prison officer reported to Hattieville police that while conducting routine patrol duties, he saw Martinez throw a small plastic bag with weed over a fence to Arthurs, who quickly picked up the bag and tried to conceal it.
