Commissioner of Lands quiet about Swallow Caye survey
We reported on Wednesday that the Ministry of Natural Resources had given the green light for surveys in a reserve just off Belize City. According to documents available to News Five, the Ministry approved a survey of approximately fifteen acres of land in the Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary in the names of Magistrate Sharon Fraser, her brother Wayne Fraser, and U.D.P. stalwart Rurico Alvarado. The approval was given as recent as May 2009 at a time when Belize is getting a black eye for disregard to protected areas within the World Heritage Barrier Reef system. News Five was in Belmopan today, and tried to contact the Commissioner of Lands, Manuel Rodriguez, about this pressing issue. While it would seem that there should be a lot of explaining to do, Rodriguez did not wish to comment on the matter.
