Darrel Mayen Awaits Sentencing in Attempted Murder Conviction

Twenty-one year old Darrel Mayen is awaiting sentencing for attempted murder after he was found guilty of the charge in a trial by judge alone. Justice Troadio Gonzalez has deferred sentencing until February nineteenth, 2016 when he will hear mitigation plea on behalf of Mayen by his attorney, Oscar Selgado.   The shooting incident occurred in August 2010, at the corner of Wood Pecker Street and Faber’s Road in Belize City. Tour guide Rafael Caceres was shot at several times, but only one bullet caught him in the back leaving him cripple for life. During trial, Caceres testified that he had just left a Chinese shop and was heading home, when he realized that he was being followed.  When he looked back, he saw Mayen pointing a gun at him, so he fled and jumped over a nearby fence. But he was shot and pursued by Mayen who caught up with him and opened fire again.  In his defence, Mayen said he was at home with his mother and sister watching television. Mayen called his mother Tanisha Cleland to testify, but she could only say that her son was at home on the night in question but did not know if he had left the house unknown to her.
