Still No Sign of Missing New River Swimmer…Presumed Drowned
The body of twenty-one-year-old Carlos Reyes, a resident of Coyocville, Trial Farm Village was fished out of the New River in Orange Walk Town on Tuesday morning. Reyes is one of two men who drowned in the murky water behind La Inmaculada Primary School the day before. While coastguard divers resumed their search of the area earlier today, all attempts at locating the submerged remains of the second male, who remains unidentified, are unsuccessful. On Monday evening, Carlos Reyes and thirty-six-year-old Hidalgo Velasquez were traveling along Riverside Street when they spotted a friend at the bank of the river. The men pulled over and joined the unnamed man at the water’s edge, before Reyes impulsively decided to take a plunge into the crocodile infested tributary. Velasquez never ventured into the water. His friend and the other person never resurfaced. Today, Inspector Nicholas Palomo of the Orange Walk Police Formation gave a brief update on the search effort.
On the phone: Insp. Nicholas Palomo, Deputy O.C., Orange Walk Police
“Coastguard commenced searching at eight o’clock this morning, however the search has been fruitless. They’ve been combing the river and they have called off the search for today. They will resume searching tomorrow when they will comb from the field of the drowning to the Banquitas area of the river.”
