Police investigate hunting in Cayo
A hunting expedition in the Cayo district ended tragically for a teenager on Monday night when he died of gunshot wounds. According to police reports, twenty-five year old Abner Nejira and his now deceased sixteen-year-old brother-in-law Waldemar Hernandez, were hunting in an area behind Frank’s Eddy Village when the incident occurred. Nejira, who originally told police they had gone fishing, says he and Hernandez had gone in separate directions, and that he heard a single gunshot. Upon checking for his companion, he found Hernandez dead on the ground with a single wound to the forehead and a sixteen-gauge shotgun and expended shell nearby. Police are investigating three possibilities: one, that Hernandez committed suicide, two, that he slipped and fell, fatally injuring himself, or three that he was accidentally shot by Nejira. Police sources tell News 5 that the two shotguns the hunters carried were both unlicensed and they are making checks to see if the weapons were those that went missing last month following a murder in the area.
