Over 35 Football Competition on Sports Monday

Story Picture
James Adderley, Reporting

Good evening I?m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday. The Over 35 Belize City Football competition at the MCC Grounds reached money time Saturday as Lake I and Kulture Yabra clashed for all the marbles.

Maybe it had nothing to do with the imminent arrival of Halloween, but the Lake-I team certainly seemed quite dressed for the occasion.

For sure the Yabra unit must have felt be-witched when in the opening minute this wicked centre from Arthur the Mob Flowers almost gives the Lake and early lead.

However, there is no mistaking the fact that Lake-I is the protagonist today ? and Arthur the Mob can?t believe he didn?t get onto the scoreboard right here.

Kulture looks to turn the tide when John Samuels lands this individual effort that s denied by goalkeeper Collins.

Now you make the call, Arthur Flowers beats one, beats two and is about to jump pass two more defenders when he is taken down, the referee rules penalty.

And so the Mob steps up to convert and he makes it look rather easy as the Lake-I takes a 1-zip lead.

Kulture looks to reply immediately when Gilbert Brown centres into the damper zone–but Mr. “Longetivity”, Peter Guy, fails to make the connection at the end.

Talk about a good score–well goalkeeper Collins digs out this low cruise missile from Gilbert Brown.

In the meantime folks make it a 2-zip lead when the Yabra defence gives Maurice Francis this gift, which he converts into a goal with a powerful left foot that tangles into the nit.

Just before the break, David McCauley should have made it 3-nil with this open look, but it turns out to be a high riser. So at the half we still have a 2-nil Lake lead.

In second half, Floyd Burgess trips his man and then fires this potent right foot that makes over the crossbar.

Kulture tries to pull one back off this corner kick but then take defence holds firm.

Still the nail in the Kulture coffin comes when Maurice Francis mounts this individual effort that culminates in a goalkeeper for the 3-nil final score.

Of course, to the victor goes the title and we take this opportunity to congratulate the entire Lake-I team on its capture of the 2004 Over-35 Football title.

Now lets head to Sandhill? for Belize Rural action as Lucky Strike Eagles go head to head with Pueblo Escondido and we?re some eight minutes in when Lincoln Jones catches with this centre to give Pueblo a 1-zip lead.

The score should have doubled here, but how Elvis Williams misses right here is any body?s guess.

In the meantime folks, how easy can it be as Elvis Williams gets an assist from the goalkeeper to give Pueblo Escondido a 2-zip lead.

A minute later, Ian Young smashes this left foot into the net to make it a 3-nil ballgame.

Lucky Eagles do pull one back before the half–thanks to the penalty conversion from Mark Zuniga.

In second half Lincoln Jones gets his second goal of the match as Pueblo Escondido goes on to post the 4-2 big w.

In cycling news, A Belizean contingent participated in the Expofer?s Cycling Classic staged in Chetumal, Mexico over the weekend. Ernest Meighan grabbed the Elite sixty-six mile event with Mateo Cruz finishing second. Marlon Castillo dominated in the junior fifty-mile ride while Ram Cattouse won the forty-four mile Masters event and we certainly say congratulations to one and all.

That?s it though. We do want to thank our cameraman for the great work over the weekend. Jah over all, I?m James Adderley.
