City Council to Replace Almost Four Thousand Manholes

Darrell Bradley

The Belize City Council is embarking on a citywide project to replace all sewer openings.  That’s almost four thousand manholes at a cost of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.  It’s the brainchild of councilors Michael Theus and Deon Leslie and fits within the context of an overall project to rehabilitate additional streets and drains.  According to Mayor Darrell Bradley, City Hall has also retained almost two hundred thousand dollars for remedial works to be done on streets that were not signed off on by CitCo.

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor

“The council is launching a program that has been spearheaded by Councilor Michael Theus and Councilor Deon Leslie to retrofit and rebuild all the manhole covers in Belize City.  This is something that the council has been looking at for a couple months and we have done an analysis and there are three thousand, eight hundred and sixty-eight manhole covers that need to be repaired in Belize City at a cost of two hundred and fifty-one thousand dollars.  That project is also being unveiled, so to speak, at this launch.  We’re also doing a series of drainage works again under the auspices of Councilor Dean Samuels, Deputy Mayor Samuels who has responsibility for works.  And those projects are concentrated in the Lake Independence and Port Loyola and Collet Area of Belize City.  I also want to mention that the council has come to terms with the one contractor that the council has not signed off on, so that we have a retention for that person in the amount of approximately a hundred and ninety thousand dollars and we are already doing the redevelopment in relation to using that retention to renovate and in some cases entirely reconstruct some of the work that the council was not satisfied with.”
