N.T.U.C.B. Issues Release on Belize/Guatemala Tension
The increased hostility between Belize and Guatemala over the past week has prompted a number of organizations, both political and non-governmental, to chime in on the escalating border situation. Aside from the Chamber, the N.T.U.C.B. has also issued a statement. This afternoon, President Marvin Mora told the media that the general council of the trade union congress has met to discuss the present situation which remains a point of grave concern for its membership.

“The National Trade Union Congress of Belize is definitely concerned and more than concerned about the recent issues, especially the recent issues relating to the situation at the border and also relating to the escalating situation between the two countries. So we are definitely looking into it and as a matter of fact we had a general council meeting last weekend and within this meeting probably the largest topic of discussion that took us the most time was indeed the escalating situation between Belize and Guatemala. So it is of concern to us and we have, I think, already sent a press release that emulates that concern that we have.”

“What is the position of the N.T.U.C.B. with regard to going to the ICJ to settle the Guatemalan question?”
Marvin Mora
“I’m glad you asked that question simply because we have already taken a position at the congress level which kind of differs slightly from the last pronunciation made by the President of the Belize National Teachers Union. Our position continues and will remain neutral in a sense but our position is that we should find means and ways to get the public educated, especially the members of our unions as to the pros and cons of not going to the ICJ. So we are neutral but with the caveat that we would want to see the government do more in informing the people of this country why we should and we would also want to see those people who oppose it step up to the plate and let us know why we should not go.”
