50 Cal Prepares for Belize/Guatemala Bout

Belize and Guatemala has been constantly in the news cycle the past two weeks.  While the leaders of the two countries are de-escalating tensions at the border, things are actually heating up in Belize City. This weekend will prove to be one where Belizeans will be able to witness for the first time the physical blows being exchanged between Guatemalan and Belizean Citizens. It’s not what you think. But a mixed martial arts sporting event had been planned to take place at the Belize Elementary Gymnasium on Saturday April thirtieth at seven p.m.  The fight fights against the Guatemalans will include MMA athletes from the Salam school in Dangriga, Prevail MMA and House of Shotokan in Belize City. News Five stopped by one of the training sessions and spoke to the coaches and to Adran Ramirez, a fighter, who is also attached to the Air-wing of the Belize Defense Force.

“We have eight fights on the card. Also we have our champion from Belize will be fighting against the champion from Guatemala. Our champion is Adran “50 Cal” Ramirez.  As I talk to the coach from Guatemala, he is not into the ill-feelings. They are coming to take the belt from our Belizean Champion. Take it from “50 Cal” Ramirez.  Adran; he’s Belizean and he wants that support. It is Belize and I expect to see Belizean flags in the audience. The Guatemalans will have their flags. We need support for the Belizean fighter.”

“What happens in the ring stays in the ring.  What happens in the border is a totally different thing. When I’m uniform I defend the country; two different parts. I’m professional I keep it like that. We are going to throw it down. Do what I got to do. Come Support Prevail Martial. Come support Salam out of Dangriga House of Shotokan Prevail. Show come show that we have talent in Belize.”

“We have seven of our fighters participating. We train consistently all the time. The last month before the fight, we peak. They just went through an hour straight cardio workout. One of the fighters did six hundred and fifty burpees in an hour. Really high pace cardio. Tomorrow, they will get a moderate workout in.  And recover for the rest of the week and get ready for Saturday. I don’t think so they are in top shape. Every day they bring it. These guys are studs. They’ve been working hard. They’ve been training for two months for this fight.  Come support them.”

Tickets are available at House of Shotokan on Princess Margaret Drive in Belize City. It’s twenty dollars at the door and thirty-five dollars if you want to sit ringside in the Belize Elementary Auditorium on Saturday night.
