NTV Won’t Accompany Southern Counterpart to Sarstoon
Today at the meeting the BTV was joined by representatives of the Northern Territorial Volunteers, headquartered in Orange Walk. The mandate of the NTV is to increase awareness of our border points, from north to south, and the group has taken over fifteen hundred Belizeans on various expeditions to those areas. ON Saturday the NTV is not going to the Sarstoon, but they will be going to Garbutt’s Falls, the center monument located near the border at Benque Viejo del Carmen.
Giovanni de la Fuente, Head, Northern Territorial Volunteers
“We will be occupying Garbutt Falls for an hour and we are encouraging all Belizeans that feel the need to come out and support us as we visit this very important monument and as we commemorate the 1859 April thirtieth signing between her majesty and the Republic of Guatemala as it relates to British Honduras. And so Belizeans this is the time; this is not Easter, this dah noh Christmas—this is the time for you to come out and show your support for Belize.”
Mike Rudon
“Do you expect any problems? We know that while the border hasn’t been shut down, there has been a sense of unease in the wake of the events of last week.”
Giovanni de la Fuente
“Okay, we are taking all precautions. We have notified all relevant authorities and we will proceed with caution. We will be erecting a barrier so that Belizeans cannot go across the line and likewise, Guatemalans will not come across the line. And so we expect all to go well and Belizeans need to recognize that we need to visit these areas. These areas are very important areas and we need to visit this area before it becomes an area that you cannot visit.”
