Over 85,000 enrolled in schools
Anywhere you travelled across the length and breadth of Belize today there was one factor that could not go unnoticed: children of all shapes and sizes, dressed in immaculately clean uniforms heading off for their first day of school. Although official enrolment figures will not be tabulated until later in the month, the Planning Information Unit of the Ministry of Education told News 5 that for the last school year a total of sixty-two thousand, one hundred and nine students attended primary school in Belize. Another three thousand, seven hundred and sixty-five were enrolled in pre-school while the high school numbers were fifteen thousand, three hundred and fifty-nine. Post secondary, not including the University of Belize, totalled two thousand, two hundred and thirty-six. Those figures are expected to rise slightly for the current year. As for the University of Belize, that institution reports a current student body of approximately twenty-one hundred. All told, over eighty-five thousand students are enrolled in the formal education system–about one out of every three Belizeans.
