BTL tops Belmopan in game one of semi-final

Story Picture
Good evening, I’m James Adderley with a brand new package of Sports Monday. The semi-pro basketball competition arrived at the post season Friday night as the number one seed BTL Nets and the number four seed Belmopan Blue Devils touched off the four-team playoffs inside the City Centre.

In both regular season meetings, the Nets had handled the Blue Devils quite easily. So, would there be a change in this round of play? Well, Claude “Too Tall” Jones certainly thinks so and he glides in for two.

In total disagreement is Keith “Superman” Acosta who raises up for three points in response.

Meanwhile, first it?s the eye contact then it’s the hand signal and the left hand exclamatory finish to the hoop and blows up in full effect and at the end of the first quarter the Nets have reeled to a twenty-six to nine lead.

For Belmopan today, Claude “Too Tall” Jones is having a nice outing–he drives successfully for the two–gets fouled and completes the three-point play.

Careless passing by the Blue Devils though allows AC Augustine to come up with the steal and two easy points for the Nets.

Belmopan strikes back through this star scorer, Aubrey Lopez, who left hands the reverse lay up.

Carlisle Barrow then goes high off the glass for two more Belmopan points and at the half the phone company lead thirty-seven to twenty-nine.

It’s a much closer score in the fourth quarter when Darwin Leslie shows off his left hand to the basket move against Claude “Too Tall” Jones.

Meanwhile Rupert Brown gets embarrassed by AC Augustine as he tries to get two points for the Capital City.

However, no one’s going to lay a finger on this left hand lay up by Aubrey Lopez who cuts the deficit to four.

But the Nets turn it up a notch in moving time–Ac Augustine pulls up in traffic for two points.

Right here Keith Acosta strips John Rhys from behind. He gets back the pass and thunders the two points home. The Nets take Game I–seventy to sixty-one.

Game II is set for Wednesday eight thirty p.m. at the City Centre.

Meanwhile in the other playoff matched up the Orange Walk Warriors by some nineteen points on Saturday, but the game stats remains elusive. Game II in this series is set for Friday September third at Orange Walk.

Turning to the football scene, Sports Monday takes this opportunity to salute all the female football players in the Jewel and we say maximum respect to the Kulture Yabra Girls.

Today their opponent are the Millennium Girls also hailing from big bad Belize City and they almost come up with the first goal of this confrontation, but Adelma Broaster cannot catch up with the pill.

When Kara Kisling break through the Yabra defence she has an open look at goal–but she squanders the opportunity.

At other end, Araceli Paulino gets taken down inside the eighteen and the referee rules penalty.

Nikita Jones steps up for the conversion, only to be denied by the goalkeeper.

Just before the half expires Adelma Broaster out runs the Yabra defence and comes up with this wicked slice to put Millennium Girls up to 1-zip.

We’re into second half when Tanya Lopez gets the ball over the wall to tie the score at 1 apiece.

Meanwhile folks, Nikita Jones thinks she has a goal right here but she was obviously off side.

However, there is no mistake when Tanya Lopez out-runs the Millennium defence and smacks the right foot home for a 2-1 Yabra lead.

A few minutes later this defensive error, allows Lopez to get to the ball and she makes it a 3-1 Yabra lead–that’s the way it would end and we say congratulations to the Yabra Girls.

In cycling news, the Annual Cattouse Masters Cycling Classic was presented over the weekend and here is the final stage as Jones Cocky Welch zooms in to take top honours. Fred Usher then beats Rey Cattouse for second. Big Mike Lewis pulls up fourth while George Abraham rounds out the top five. That’s in the thirty lap feature around the Princess Margaret Drive. However, the overall win goes to Cattouse, Fred Usher and George Abaraham in that order for the A class. In the B Class John Burns took top honours, Keneth Butler finished second and then Kevin Hall round out the top three.

In closing folks, we would like to congratulate the Belize Defence Force for staging the successful BDF Day here in Belize City over the weekend. It was a large undertaking, filled with logistical nightmares, but the Army pulled it off professionally without a hitch. In fact, let’s call it a glimpse of the Belizean Olympics.

Here we have the backstroke in the Y pool. Basketball and volleyball were taken to the SJC Gym and Football took centre stage at the SJC field. The rest of the crew were headquartered inside the Marion Jones Sporting Complex. Hey congratulations again for this presentation.

We just got to tell you before we go though that the Mr. Belize Body Building Contest 2004 edition comes up this Friday September third, 2004 inside the Princess Hotel and Casino at seven-thirty p.m. and the cost is ten dollars.

That’s it for now, we invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
