Wade, Aguilar run out of the money in Athens

Story Picture
Belize has only two athletes competing at the Athens Olympics and this morning, within eight hours of each other, they both had their shot at glory. Shortly after two a.m. Belize time, Emma Wade eased into the blocks for her qualifying heat in the two hundred metres. Calling the race for the Caribbean Media Corporation were Hubert Lawrence and Pauline Davis-Thompson.

Wade finished fifth out of sixth runners with a time of 23:45 seconds

This was Wade?s second Olympic appearance. She ran the hundred metres in Sydney, finishing seventh out of eight in her heat, despite personal best time.

Emma?s valiant effort was followed shortly before eleven Belize time by that of Michael Aguilar. Aguilar was one of seven men running a first round heat in the four hundred metre hurdles, one of the more punishing athletic events. Once again, here?s how it looked in Athens.

Aguilar ran seventh out of seven with a time of 51:21 seconds

While both Wade and Aguilar failed to advance into the finals, they still remain among a tiny group of world class athletes who we are proud to call Belizeans. Channel 5?s live Olympic coverage will continue on Friday at ten forty-five in the morning as we follow Marion Jones in her bid for a gold medal in the women?s long jump final and the four-by-one hundred relay. On Saturday our coverage begins at eleven thirty with the finals in a number of athletic events and on Sunday the closing ceremonies begin also at eleven thirty. Don?t forget the CMC daily Olympic highlights package every evening just before this newscast at six p.m.
