60 Minutes’ Morley Safer Dies

Morley Safer is one of the most recognized faces in broadcast journalism. His reports on CBS’s Sixty Minutes on Sundays attracted millions across the world for his distinctive style. As a CBS News correspondent, Safer also reported and wrote documentaries, including the “CBS Reports” series and CBS News special reports for at least five decades. A 1967 special report, “Morley Safer’s Red China Diary,” was the first broadcast by a U.S. network news team from inside the Communist country. Over the decades that he worked in television, he won numerous prestigious awards.  Safer passed away this morning at his home in New York and in the industry; tributes have been flowing in recognition of his body of work. While he is a familiar face on CBS programs, we remember him for a report on Belize for Sixty Minutes, which was aired back in 1988 that Safer wrote and reported. While the winds of change have blown across the country, a lot of what he said then is still relevant. Here is a snippet.
