Special Edition Sports Wednesday – Football and Softball Stats
Good evening, I’m James Adderley with a Wednesday edition of Sports Monday. You know some days are better than others so let’s jump into the action.
Monday’s Belize City 1st Division Football matchup saw Lake I strikers and Ladyville Jaguars take aim at each other in a hotly contested ballgame. Under heavy pressure, Whitfield Fisher tries to open the scoreboard for Lake I Strikers, but the ball eventually rolls past the far corner. However, Ladyville Jaguars look just as dangerous off this set piece launch that sees two attempts at goal go by the wayside. The real opening for the Jaguars comes when the Strikers left-back commits this blatant foul inside the box and the referee rules penalty. Joel Ottley gets the call and easily leaves goalkeeper Keron Miguel immobile as Lake I Strikers take a 1-zip lead at the 33rd minute. Eight minutes later Lake I Strikers back off this individual effort by Kadeem Myers who escapes into the box to fire a right foot slice that rebounds off goalkeeper, Nigel Grant, right back to the striker and this time, the left foot does the trick to tie the score at one apiece.
In early 2nd half play, Joel Ottley tries for the double off this set piece only to be denied by Keron Miguel in goal. At the 65th minute of play, Whitfield Fisher launches this solo flight to beat all in his way, including the goalkeeper, to give Lake I a 2-1 lead. Fisher comes back looking for more with this wicked left foot launch, but this time, is denied by a tough save from Nigel Grant. Lake I Strikers goes on to grab the 2-1 big win in regulation play. In the other matchup results, West Lake burned Fort George in a 1-zip blast on a goal from Devaun Zuniga.
Now let’s check in on the Smart Mundialito at the MCC Grounds on Saturday as Collet Strikers took on Carlston FC. Brandon Smith beats his man to give Collet Strikers an early 1-zip lead. It’s certainly Brandon Smith’s day because 8 minutes later, he shakes the net again to give Collet Strikers a 2-zip lead. However, Carlston FC comes roaring back on this goal from #9 Linsford Nunez. Brandon Smith looks to restore the 2 goal lead with this left foot punch, but is denied by the crossbar. Jevon Theus then ties the ballgame at 2-apiece with this left foot offering, forcing the teams to share the points.
In the nightcap, Ruben Darius powers this ball into the back of the net to give Hattieville Riverside Boys a 1-nil lead over Heights FC. Less than a minute later, Jose Almendarez skillfully guides this ball into the near corner to give Hattieville Riverside Boys a 2-nil victory over Heights FC.
Meanwhile in other results: City Boys got goals from Kayia Requeña and Rashid Lord to hand Race of Belize a 2-zip defeat. Young Warriors rallied past Reality Youths by that same score on goals.
Turning to the softball scene; perennial rivals Belize Bank Bulldogs and Belize Telemedia Limited faced off yet again on Friday in the Belize City Female Softball Competition. We’re in the 2nd inning when B.T.L. pitcher Martha Rhys runs into trouble—Cindy Joseph smacks this ball through the hole to get Marsha Wills home and would score 3 runs. In the 5th inning, B.T.L. rallies. Ashley Lucas is touched with bases loaded as Earlene Belisle is allowed to reach 1st base on what should have been an out. Lydia Cacho then produces a perfect bunt to bring home Kemani Williams. Norecia Frazer then swings for the fences to bring home Earlene Belisle to tie the ballgame at 3-apiece. In the bottom of the 6th, Mary Flowers is hit by Lynette Staines for what should have been an out. Yuko Tanakgama fumbles and pinch runner Janeka Hilton speeds home. Belize Bank Bulldogs takes the win in a 4-3 score.
Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
