Red Cross trains care givers

Story Picture
The graduation season is over, but a group of special students who received their certificates this afternoon were no less proud of their achievement. Eighteen community workers today completed a six week intensive course and graduated as certified Home Health Care givers. Course participant Maria Ellis says the Red Cross training has equipped her and the others to bring comfort to chronically ill persons in the community.

Maria Ellis, Course Participant

“I learned how to deal with people how to have patience with people. And I also did practical; I went and I did practical with various people. And I learned a lot, I learned to have patience and to care for people. And whenever they have a problem I could talk to them and comfort them. I feel good about what I did.”

Mary Ellis, Director General, Red Cross

“Home care givers are persons who have been trained with the skills necessary to look after people who are ill at home. So they are not nurses, they don?t look after the acutely ill but they certainly have all the skills necessary to look after people who are chronically ill, the elderly, and young children who need some support at home.?

Guest speaker for the graduation was Prime Minister Said Musa who congratulated the seventeen women and one man for completing the course. The Prime Minister reminded the graduates that they, like the Red Cross, serve every day, and not only in times of disaster.
