Oswald Garcia Perishes in Road Traffic Accident

There was a fatal road traffic accident early this morning, involving a pickup truck traveling along the George Price Highway. Thirty-one-year-old Oswald Garcia was violently flung from his vehicle between miles thirteen and fourteen, after losing control of its steering. The coconut vendor was presumably intoxicated at the time of the accident and had been driving the Dodge Ram pickup in the direction of Orange Walk Town. Garcia sustained massive injuries after being dragged by the vehicle. He perished at the scene of the accident. Assistant Commissioner of Police Edward Broaster provided details of a preliminary investigation.

“Friday May twenty-seventh, 2016, we received information of a traffic accident between miles thirteen and fourteen on the Phillip Goldson Highway. When our police were dispatched to the area they observed a white Dodge Ram pickup truck along with a single individual dressed in a blue shirt who was lying face down alongside the vehicle. Apparently the vehicle is used to transport coconuts. It was later learned that the person’s name was Oswald Garcia, thirty-one-years-old, who unfortunately died on the spot. It is apparent that he was traveling from Belize City direction to Orange Walk when it is obvious that he lost control of his vehicle and was flung out of the vehicle and dragged on the pavement where he succumbed to his injuries. A closer inspection of the Dodge Ram revealed that the door was unable to shut close and we believe that alcohol may have been a factor in this case.”

“So is it a fact that maybe he fell asleep at the wheel or fell out?”

“I have no idea. From what we’ve gathered it appears as though he lost control of the vehicle and because the door is not secured, he fell out and apparently was dragged to his death.”

“Mr. Broaster, in cases like these where alcohol is, there’s a suspicion that alcohol may have played a factor in his death, is it the policy of the police department to actually do a blood test on somebody who’s already dead?”

“Yes, to confirm that alcohol was a factor.”
