Snake: it’s what’s for lunch

Story PictureIt’s not everyday that we come across a boa constrictor so big that it could kill you with its mere strength. News Five cameras captured a ten foot long “wowla” just as fish cleaners at the Vernon Street market were preparing to skin it and cut it open. The story behind the seventy-five pound snake is an interesting one, as we found out from Alpheus Smith, who brought it from Gales Point Manatee to sell in Belize City.

Alpheus Smith, Caught Snake
“Yesterday morning my son went out on the beach and he saw the snake and he caught it. It was just going in the hole and he pulled it by the tail in Gales Point on the beach.”

“So how did he get it here?”

Alpheus Smith
“He put a stick and crutch ih head down and then I tie it and put it in a bag and I brought it from Gales Point on my boat.”

Marion Ali
“I see you guys are skinning it. What do you intend to do with it?”

Alpheus Smith
“Well, I brought it yesterday to sell it. He told me to sell it. It cost seventy-five dollars but it seems that it’s hard to find a buyer because the Chinese they say it’s too big. So I just came, I heard they’re skinning it. I came to see what they’re doing, you know? I’m not sure what I’m going to do with it now. I don’t know if they could sell it because they’re skinning it, I don’t know if anybody will buy it, but a few bucks would be good, you know?”

Smith says it’s not strange to come across snakes this size in Gales Point.
