One year old drowns at Caye
The summer holidays are a time when many Belizean families pack up the kids and head out to the cayes. But coupled with the fun and relaxation of seaside living is the ever present danger to those who can?t swim, particularly children. That danger proved fatal on Tuesday at Tobacco Caye when a one-year-old boy lost his life, apparently of drowning. Police report that according to Margaret Vernon of Belize City, her son Jaylen Leslie wandered off from their house at the picturesque island, located ten miles east-southeast of Dangriga, around sixty thirty Tuesday evening. His body was later found in the sea. Jaylen was pronounced dead on arrival at Southern Regional Hospital, where his body awaits a post-mortem. Police do not suspect foul play.
