Belizean Canoeist wait out floods in Texas
In related news from the world of sports, Belize has a high-powered team entered in one of North America’s most prestigious canoe races…but the problem is the venue has received so much rain that the river is unpaddleable. Armin Lopez, Alex Lisbey, and Daniel Cruz, all veteran champions of our own Ruta Maya race, form one-half of a six-man team competing in a forty-foot long canoe in the Texas Water Safari. That two-hundred-sixty mile non-stop course, which calls for thirty-six straight hours of paddling, was originally set for June nineteenth. Heavy rains postponed the event until July third, but record flooding has now forced organisers to reschedule until July seventeenth. The Belize team, which finished first in the preliminary, has the pole position, but the extended stay has our team’s finances stretched thin. We’ll keep you posted on their progress.
