City Council helps homeless dads

Story Picture
The battlefield park: it’s a place where people from all walks of life cross paths on a daily basis, some passing through on their way to do business, others meeting old friends and some just relaxing in the shade. But this afternoon it was the people who’ve taken up permanent residence inside the park that were the focus of an initiative by the Belize City Council. Employees of the Council pooled their financial resources and manpower to prepare a Father’s Day meal for the men who hang out in the park. Recipients say they are grateful for the gesture, while Councillor Jenny Craig told News 5 it is the employees’ way of giving back to their city.

Frank Burns, Homeless

?Well it means much because it thank the City Council for the food because according to what I understand it?s Fathers Day they are celebrating. I thank them for the food.?

Raymond Dunn, Homeless

?I feel very good and very great, so I thank God for everything.?

Patrick Jones

?How are you celebrating Father?s Day this year??

Raymond Dunn, Homeless

?I?m gonna go somewhere and have a good time.?

Jenny Craig, City Councillor

?We brought two hundred and fifty to three hundred plates. It?s a full course meal, they get a drink, they get dessert and they get a plate of food.?

?We are basically feeding the homeless, it?s the second year running that we are dong this here in Battlefield Park because we have a lot of fathers that hang out in the park. It not necessarily mean Patrick that we are only going to feed only fathers. Anybody that comes up and wants a plate of food, once they are homeless, or a father, we?re going to have them enjoy a meal today.?

Janet Smith

?As I see the crowd joining in, I join with them too. I just like to come and sit down out there and relax a little. So as I see them I join in too.?

Brian Tillett, City Council Employee

?Well I think it?s a good thing they are doing for the public, for the poor people out here in Battlefield Park, because a lot of them don?t have nothing to eat too, you know.?

Patrick Jones

?Anything special you want to say to your own dad for Father?s Day??

Brian Tillett

?Happy Father?s Day Randolph Tillett, that?s my dad, you know.?

Apart from the meals distributed in the park, the City Council employees also delivered food to the shut-ins at the Ghan’s Rest Home and other facilities in Belize City.
