One dead in W. Hwy. rollover
Belmopan police are still investigating the cause of a traffic accident on the Western Highway which claimed the life of a young woman from Belmopan. She is twenty-one year old Jamie Lee Zelaya. Reports are that just before seven on Tuesday evening, Zelaya, her seventeen-year-old brother Moamar, and two other people were heading from Belize City to Belmopan. Moamar was behind the wheel and the teenager told authorities that heavy rains made the road extremely slippery. Somewhere between miles forty-six and forty-seven, near Guanacaste Park, the Ford Ranger pick-up truck went out of control and flipped over at least three times, coming to rest on the south side of the highway. News 5 understands that Moamar sustained injuries to the right shoulder but his sister, riding in the back seat behind him, suffered serious head and body injuries. By the time the police arrived at the scene Jamie Lee Zelaya was already dead. The other two passengers in the vehicle at the time of the accident received minor injuries but were treated at the Western Regional Hospital and have since been released. Authorities say while Moamar and the front seat passenger were wearing their seatbelts, Jamie Lee and the person sitting beside her were not. Family members say the young woman will be buried on Saturday in Belmopan.
