Third murder in as many days
For the third straight day, Belize City police have had the unpleasant task of collecting a body from the roadside. This time the crime scene was in the area of Marigold Lane and Jasmine Street. Residents tell News 5 that around ten-thirty on Tuesday night they observed forty-five year old Gilbert Reyes staggering down Tibruce Street before he collapsed in front of a house at the corner of Jasmine and Marigold. Thinking that he was drunk, neighbours tried to revive him by throwing water on Reyes, but when they turned him over they observed blood coming from an apparent stab wound to his chest. Police took Reyes to the K.H.M.H. where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Police Press Officer, G. Michael Reid says investigations revealed that Reyes had been socializing with friends at a house on Tibruce Street. It is not known if the deceased had been in a fight with one of his drinking partners but police have detained one of the men whom they believe will be able to assist them in their investigation. Family members told News 5 that Reyes left home around six o’clock Tuesday evening to return a bicycle to a friend and was to have gone to Maskall village this morning to take up a carpentry job. Reyes’s body awaits a post mortem examination.
