Willoughby Says Sanitation Works to Continue in the City

Sanitation works have been ongoing for the past four days in neighborhoods in Belize City hard hit by Hurricane Earl. Most of the main thoroughfares across the Old Capital have been cleared and traffic is flowing unimpeded. In some areas, however, debris and fallen trees have been stockpiled unto the streets, causing inconvenience to commuters. Garbage collection is expected to be fully restored shortly. CEMO Coordinator Phillip Willoughby spoke to News Five about the plans to deal with the debris.

“What we have noticed Saturday night into Sunday morning that the residents now are cleaning the debris and now those are coming out on the street. So we are at this point in time considering if we should suspend the cleanup operation, do the PR for one week and allow and assist residents to take out the debris and fallen trees from out of their yards and then we resume back after this one week suspension and do a thorough sweep of the city and I hope that that would be an end to it all as it relates to the damages from Hurricane Earl.”
