Two dead in highway mishaps
Two Belizeans have died in separate traffic accidents over the weekend. On Saturday afternoon, thirty-five year old Ramon Pacheco lost his life when the driver of the car in which he was riding lost control of the vehicle and it flipped over on the approach to the Guatemalan border. Pacheco died on the spot of injuries to the head and body. Driver Marcos Santos, fellow passenger Ramon Pook, and the deceased were all bus drivers by profession.
In the Orange Walk District, the famous Mamayal Curve has claimed another victim. He is ten-year-old Kevin Leslie. The child was thrown from the van he was riding in when it was hit by a tractor coming from the opposite direction on the Northern Highway around ten-thirty Saturday night. According to police reports, the tractor was hit from behind by a cane truck which caused the tractor driver to lose control of his vehicle and cross the centre line. The van was driven by Kevin’s mother, Cynthia Leslie of Belize City. Police continue to question the truck and tractor drivers.
